Patent Newsletter Reboot
I think its time to double down on Substack with less focus on Twitter/Stocktwits for patent related news and events. Twitter has become an even bigger mess after Elon Musk purchased the platform last year and Stocktwits has been a miserable experience lately with trolls (at least for me). The decrease in free time due to becoming a new dad and my new role at my every day job (its really awesome) has lead me to value my time more and more. I am kicking around the Substack Notes stream especially if I can keep it subscriber access only.
Special Note: I am not a patent attorney. I am just a guy who has learned a lot about patents and the patent system through publicly traded events over the last 13+ years.
I have no idea how frequent I will publish other than I will try my best. Sticking to deadlines has always been difficult and I expect it to become even more challenging. I think I am going to start with some of the patent litigation news and events that I find interesting or might be market moving. The Newsletter will likely start as “flash alerts” for different events as they come in from the Federal Circuit, PTAB, and District Courts with the filing, a quick summary of results, and a few opinions 3-4 paragraphs max. If an event needs to be expanded on or I have additional thoughts, I can do it at a later time, when its not as time sensitive.
I have also been monitoring the new patent applications published and issued for investment ideas or because they are cover really interesting new technology. I think newsletter entries on newly published patents from startups, private companies, universities, US Military, etc might also be interesting for readers. I am also interested in short/long ideas and how new IP being developed or old IP expiring impacts an investment.
I don’t think I will do too many longer form writeups. I appreciate and respect everyone who writes the 20+ page reports, but I think my bread and butter is identifying a potential catalyst or patent event and putting it on the radar for teams to explore in the investment process. IE your short idea is really interesting, but did you know they have zero filed IP, the patent applications are rejected at the patent office, or the core patents covering a product are expiring in the next XX months and this is how keep changing the patent language in the annual 10K filings.
The plan is to keep the newsletter free and see where it goes. I also plan to change the name of the newsletter to something more appropriate.
